This June I traveled with a colleague to Northern India to provide primary care through a group called Global Gateway Network.  My colleague and I are both Family Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Educators with a sense of adventure and a high need to contribute to the health of people around the world.  Previously we have journeyed to Ecuador together and both of us have been on other global health trips.  This was my first time to India though my colleague has been there many times and was able to give me a pretty clear picture of what to expect.

The Difference Nursing “Care” Can Make

The past two years have provided me, a nurse for over thirty years, the opportunity to witness the effect that nurses, and the way they communicate with patients and their families, can have on a family.  I have always appreciated excellent nursing care and expect it of my colleagues and my students, I and knew intuitively that the care provided and the communication accompanying it was important to patients and their families.  However, experiencing the withholding of information when I thought I was considered a family member was a true eye opener.
